Ladakh freezes at -12 C, cold grips Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 21: Fog engulfed the picturesque Kashmir Valley on Sunday, disrupting normal life, while Drass in the Union territory of Ladakh froze at minus 12.0 degrees Celsius.
Night temperatures further intensified at most places in Kashmir and Ladakh, however, there was a slight improvement in Srinagar, where minimum temperature was recorded at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius against minus 1.5 degrees Celsius the previous day.
Vehicles were playing on most of the roads in Srinagar with headlights on in the morning.
A large rush of people in the traditional Sunday market on Residency Road and at Lal Chowk, making purchase of warm clothes.
The famous tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir shivered at minus 4.2 degrees against the minus 4.3 degrees a day ago, showing the slight change of a notch. Most of the small water bodies were frozen in Pahalgam due to the dip in night temperature.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, settled on minus 1.3 degrees for the second consecutive day on Sunday.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway observed a further dip in the temperature and it was recorded at minus 2.2 degrees against minus 1.8 degrees yesterday.
The frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minimum temperature of minus 3.0 degrees against minus 2.7 degrees recorded a day ago.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg also witnessed a further drop in the night temperature and it was recorded at minus 1.4 degrees against the 1.0 degrees there. Thick fog coupled with cold breeze forced the tourists to stay indoors in their respective hotels in the morning, a report from the valley of meadow said.
Drass settled at minus 12.0 degrees for the second consecutive day at Air Force Station there, while it was minus 8.5 degrees at Leh against minus 10.3 degrees recorded a day ago, an improvement of two degrees in the night temperature.
The weather is likely to remain dry in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region till November 23, a MeT office said.
