Kulgam, Nov 27: Senior Congress Leader and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday said that wise man can’t even think of downgrading a 175 yr old State into a Union Terrtory.
Addressing party convention at Devsar in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Jammu and Kashmir was a 101 years old state when India partitioned into India and Pakistan.
“No one had ever imagined that Jammu and Kashmir would be divided into two Union Territories which was even debated in the United Nations multiple times during the past seventy years,” Azad said, adding “Jammu and Kashmir is known across the globe because of the Kashmir Issue.”
He said that Kashmir was being known by all across the globe despite the fact that it’s not a country. “We are known for Kashmiriyat,” he added.
Jammu and Kashmir, Azad said, came into existence in 1986 and the state was 101 year old in 1947.
“We had 563 states when the British freed us. All these states were merged and 12 states came into existence but no part was merged with Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir is 175 years old while the rest of the states are just 75 years old,” Azad said.
He said that usually Union Territory is upgraded into a state but here a state was degraded and divided into two Union Territories.
“Degrading state into Union Territories is like converting DGP into thanedar, CM as MLA and Chief Secretary as Patwari and no wise man can do this. It means there is a problem with mind,” he said.
Demanding a Judicial probe into Hyderpora Encounter, Azad alleged that some officers in security agencies were killing innocents for prizes and medals. “It also happened in my tenure as well but I investigated the matter and all those who killed innocents are languishing in jails,” he said. Azad said that he will continue to fight against the Government till statehood isn’t restored.
“We demand that Jammu and Kashmir State which existed on 4th of August 2019 be returned back to us,” he said, adding, he and his colleagues were ready to lay sacrifices for it.
Azad also asked the Central Government to complete the process during winter months and hold elections next year after winter ends.
