KVK promotes hydroponics technology | | | Early Times Report REASI, Dec 11: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi is promoting the hydroponics technology for the production of fresh organic vegetables. KVK, Reasi has established a hydroponics unit at its campus and many farmers of the area are showing keen interest in this innovative technology. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that hydroponics is an art or science of growing plants in water or in an inert growing medium that is enriched with all the necessary nutrients required for the optimum growth of plants. According to him, in hydroponics system plants get balanced water and nutrition and this system saves about 80 per cent of water. He added that with the increasing droughts and decreasing water table, hydroponics technology can prove as an efficient method of farming in modern era. Dr. Banarsi said that as the agricultural land is shrinking, this technology has the future. He informed that in hydroponics system, plants are grown without soil so there are least chances of infestation of insects-pests and diseases in the crop. He added that good quality leafy vegetables can be produced by using this technology. He said that leafy crops such as lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard etc. can be grown hydroponically and one can generate profits by adopting this technology. He added that the crops like tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, strawberry etc. can also be grown in this system of farming. Dr. Gurdev Chand, HOD, Division of Plant Physiology, SKUAST-J informed that the plants are grown in an inert substrate such as the perlite, coco coir, gravel etc. in the hydroponics unit. He said that plants are grown in the channel usually made of plastic that allows nutrients solution to flow uniformly through it in this system. He said that the oxygen is not depleted in the system and nutrition solution is always flown in the system. He added that hydroponics system is very effective to grow the leafy vegetables organically and even the people from urban areas can grow fresh organic vegetables by the adoption of this technology. |
