| SOTTO organizes workshop under National Organ Donation Programme | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 23: In continuation to promote Human Organ Donation and Transplantation in the Union Territory of J&K, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K in collaboration with Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College Jammu organized one day awareness program on Deceased Human Organ Donation on Thursday in the college.
The awareness session witnessed the participation of around 100 NCC cadets and NSS volunteers (boys and girls) of the college. They were also made aware of the programme and were informed about the legal procedure involved in organ donation. Many participants filled up pledge forms for organ donation.
Welcome address was given by Dr. Ravender Tickoo, Principal GGM Science College. He said that the goal is to remove the fear of organ donation by spreading awareness and "There is a need for each one to teach ten regarding deceased organ donation" he added".
Detailing about the key legal issues and challenges for initiating the deceased donation programme, Dr. Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director, SOTTO J&K said that the state really needs to improve the rate of deceased organ donation. The Government has taken some positive steps. However, synergized efforts and engagement of the civil society, religious leaders and other stakeholders are required for creating mass awareness about the cause, he added.
Dr. Irfan Lone, Transplant Coordinator, SOTTO J&K said that the gap of organ availability and organ requirement can only be filled by pledging our organs for donation.
Dr. (Capt.) Anjana Sharma, Department of Computer Science motivated the students to come forward and pledge for organ donation, so that this gap can be filled.
Vote of thanks was presented by Prof Pinky Chandwal, Department of Computer Science.
Further, students presented a skit on Organ Donation. The whole programme was coordinated by Prof. Meena Gupta from Deptt. of Electronics, Dr. Deepika Jamwal from Deptt. of electronics, Anshu Sharma Consultant (Media/IEC) SOTTO J&K, Nisha Kumari, Program Assistant, SOTTO J&K. |
