Avoid celebrations

Three people who had tested positive for Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Jammu region, according to the officials, have turned negative and have recovered.
The patients who had tested positive for the variant had no international travel history. This has evoked concern as it means that the new variant has arrived in Jammu and it can spread. The Omicron is making its presence felt and the government needs to take preventive steps well in advance.
Recently the administration announced that anyone who is found without a mask will be fined Rs 200/ for the first time and subsequently he/she will have to pay Rs 500 as fine. People should understand that by wearing a mask they are not doing any favour to anyone, by doing so they are trying to protect from the onslaught of the new variant which is knocking at our doors.
From day one experts and scientists have been urging people to follow the Covid sops in letter and spirit as precaution is better than cure. People need to understand that scientists are working to find out how deadly the new variant can prove. But given the data about the variant doesn’t yet convey the magnitude of the threat it poses, the best recourse would be to follow Covid protocols while the scientists and medical experts do their job.
The World Health Organization has already sounded an alarm and has called upon the countries to keep the Christmas and New Year celebrations as a low key affair. The extent of the transmission is still evolving. But we cannot become complacent. Past experiences have taught us that the COVID-19 is dangerous and it spreads at a rapid pace. We need to remember how fast the virus has spread in South Africa.
The experts are still investigating whether the new variant leads to more severe, or milder, illness and it will take weeks before one of the most crucial questions is answered: How does it affect people who have had a past infection, vaccine shots, or both?
Early indications suggest it may be less dangerous than delta, which continues to drive a surge of hospitalizations globally. But we cannot come to conclusions fast. The arrival of Omicron could be an indication that the Third Wave of COVID has struck and all of us need to give up celebrations and social gatherings till things become clearer.
