Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 15: Security forces shot dead a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant in an encounter in Kashmir on Tuesday.
Officials said the encounter erupted at Charsoo village in Awantipora sub-district of South Kashmir during a search operation, which was launched by joint forces.
"During the search operation, as the party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the search party, which was retaliated effectively, leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, one terrorist was killed," a police statement said.
The slain person has been identified as Owais Raja. One AK-56 rifle, three AK Magazines and 80 AK rounds were recovered from the site of the encounter.
"As per police records, the slain was a categorised terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT. He was part of a group involved in several terror crime cases, including attack on Police/SF and civilian atrocities," added the statement.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Vijay Kumar termed this operation as "very important," as the encounter took place in a village very close to Srinagar Jammu National Highway.
"This operation is very important as it is situated very close to NHW and (the) threat was imminent," he said. This month, eight militants have been killed in six gunfights in Kashmir.
