Bring tourists to Jammu
4/15/2022 11:26:45 PM
The J&K Government is projecting huge influx of tourists into Kashmir as its major achievement and is claiming that it’s a vital sign about normalcy having returned to the Valley, but recent attacks on members of the minority communities in Kashmir have punctured the normalcy claims.
No one can deny that a good number of tourists visited the Valley during the past two months, but it seems that the present dispensation has forgotten that it’s not for the first time that tourists are visiting Kashmir. They have visited the Valley even when the militancy was at its peak. Anyway the present dispensation is selling the arrival of tourists in Kashmir as its main achievement.
Recently, an Aam Admi Party leader, Taranjit Singh Tony said that the administration should stop blowing his own trumpet and it really wants to take credit of this achievement then it should come up with a plan to ensure that all the tourists who visit Kashmir also come to Jammu. Tony has raised a valid point and if the administration succeeds in diverting tourists towards Jammu then it can project it as an achievement.
Despite Jammu having immense potential for tourism nothing much was done by the erstwhile political regimes to explore this potential. The governments led by Kashmir based leaders focused on the Valley and did not pay much attention towards Jammu. People of Jammu were hoping that after August 5, 2019, things will change and discrimination with Jammu region would end but it seems that even the abrogation of Article 370 has not helped the cause of Jammu people.
The present dispensation in J&K needs to introspect and see what it has done for enhancing tourism infrastructure in Jammu and has any attention been paid towards exploring the potential of the places that could attract the tourists.
It’s unfortunate but true that the Tourism Department has miserably failed to attract tourists in Jammu’s famous tourist destinations like Mansar, Surinsar, and Suchetgarh. These tourist places have been ignored by previous as well as incumbent regime. Not much attention has been paid towards developing these places as venues for attracting tourists. The claims of the Tourism Department about promoting Jammu and Kashmir regions equally on the tourism map have proven to be a hoax.
