SKUAST-Jammu celebrates 'World Milk Day 2022' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 2: The world milk day was celebrated on 1st June, 2022 at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, R.S. Pura, under the able guidance of Prof. J. P. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu. Prof. Sharma congratulated the Veterinary fraternity for their contribution in making India as the global champion in milk production. Dr. M.S. Bhadwal, Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, R. S. Pura congratulated the students, teaching and non-teaching members of veterinary faculty. In his message, he also highlighted the importance of milk and milk products in human nutrition. On the occasion, the students of the faculty were sensitized about the responsibility, opportunity and significance of celebrating world milk day. They were addressed on the importance of milk and milk products in human nutrition and scientific interventions of veterinarians in production of quality milk and milk products. India currently contributes 23 percent to the global milk production and has shown a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 6.2 percent and annual production of 209.96 million tons in year 2020-21. On this occasion, Dr. Sunil Kumar, Professor and Head, Division of Livestock Products Technology delivered a lecture to the undergraduate students and emphasized that milk processing can be a profitable venture for dairy farmers and highlighted need and importance of improved dairy practices and scientific production systems to reduce the environmental impact. The importance of packaging and marketing of milk products in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir was also emphasized. Dr. Kumar also said that World Milk Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. The day was established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of United Nations and is celebrated on 1stJune every year. World milk day is celebrated throughout the world with different themes each year and this year's theme was to achieve "Dairy Net Zero". The aim was to reduce emission of greenhouse gasesfrom dairy industry over the period of next 30 years. The theme also emphasized the need to improve waste management in the dairy sectorto make the industry more sustainable.The day provides a platform to draw attention of people to celebrate the contributions of the dairy and milk sector around the globe and to publicize events and activities related to milk industry. Some countries celebrate a week before or after 1st June. The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are associated with the dairy sector in India. The day also provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the contribution of milk and dairy products in healthy diets, responsible food production, and supporting livelihoods and communities. There is a tremendous opportunities in dairy sector of India and the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. |
