Grand Alliance in J&K?
6/16/2022 11:36:49 PM

Two former chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti attending a meeting called by the opposition to evolve consensus on the name of a candidate for the presidential poll is a hint that National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have agreed to contest the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K together.
After the Delimitation Commission has submitted its final report, the political parties in J&K are trying to make their presence felt and are making an effort to remain relevant.
No party is talking about restoration of statehood, only demand the politicians are raising is that the elections should be held in Jammu and Kashmir.
After August 5, 2019, political scenario in J&K has changed completely. Leaders of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party are aware that winning elections is not going to be that easy this time around.
The Congress Party too is on a sticky wicket and to put up a fight all these three parties will have to come together.
BJP has already made inroads into the erstwhile bastions of the Congress Party in Jammu region and the new political formations that have appeared in Kashmir are challenging NC and PDP in their citadels.
If NC, PDP and Congress have to make some impact on the ground then these parties will have to come together.
Going alone won’t help their cause as the forthcoming assembly elections are a Herculean task for them in the completely changed political scenario.
Omar and Mehbooba have dropped enough hints about NC and PDP joining hands. Mehbooba is also trying to revive her old relations with Sonia Gandhi.
There are reports that opposition leaders in the country too are playing a role to put up a joint opposition in J&K.
There is a possibility about elections being held in J&K by the end of this year or early next year. The traditional parties are not left with too much of time to decide their future course of action.
The leaders of these parties will have to take a decision soon.
It seems NC and PDP are on the same page but the Congress in J&K has been marred by the infighting. The ‘Grand Old Party’ of the country needs to settle its differences and gear up for elections.
