Kashmir netas get active as assembly election rumours fly thick and fast | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 30: Even as the Election Commission of India is yet to announce date for the much-awaited Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the rumor mills are rife that polls will be held in the coming months with Kashmiri netas getting active in the field. In the last few days, the National Conference, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference have been “holding back to back events to show their influence in the field.” For the National Conference apart from the main party, even the women’s wings of the party in both the provinces have gone active. On June 27, the women’s wings of both Jammu and Kashmir held daylong conventions in both the capitals to show the new cadres joining the party folds. Former Chief Minister and Member Parliament Dr Farooq Abdullah personally addressed a mega convention in the summer capital while more such events are in the offing. Likewise, on June 23 former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a daylong convention in Amira Kadal constituency. On June 29, former Chief Minister and PDP President visited Charar-e-Sharief whereas a day prior to it a party convention was held at her Srinagar residence. The Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari and Peoples Conference of Sajad Lone are equally active holding their party events in various parts of Kashmir with Bukhari saying that holding elections was the due right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. On June 18, in the first indication of a timeline for assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during his visit to J&K said that there was a “strong possibility” of starting the electoral process by “the end of this year”. In August 2019, the State of J&K lost its so called special status following the abrogation of Article 370 and was downgraded to a Union Territory — the State’s bifurcation led to the creation of a separate UT of Ladakh. Speaking at a function organised to mark 200 years of the coronation of Maharaja Shri Gulab Singh Ji, the first Dogra ruler of the princely State of J&K, Singh said, “Mujhe lagta hai ki is saal ke ant tak ho sakta hai ki chunavi prakriya bhi prarambh ho. Iski prabal sambhavna hai (I think the electoral exercise may also commence by the end of this year. There is a strong possibility).” |
