Hot, humid weather to continue in Kashmir : Met Director

Srinagar, July 1: Hot and humid weather conditions will continue to prevail in Kashmir valley and even chances of short spell of rains in between could provide relief to the people to some extent, said the Director Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus on Friday.
Kashmir valley experienced the hottest day of the season Thursday following the day temperature touching a record 34.2 degree Celsius which was 2 degree Celsius more than Jammu region, MeT office said.
Lotus said the month of June, July and August usually remains hot and humid in Kashmir valley but June 30 recorded 34.2 degree Celsius was the hottest day of the season so far.
He said there are expectations that the temperature could touch 35 degree Celsius in the month of July and people should mentally prepare themselves to acclimatize with the climate change.
However, he said it is not for the first time that temperature may touch 35 degree Celsius, in the past years the day temperature was recorded 35 degree Celsius even in the month of June.
He said some monsoon clouds have appeared on the sky and could cause one or two short spells of rain during the end of the day between July 5-6 could provide relief to the people.
He advised people to adapt with the changing climate to prepare mentally and consume frequent water and juice to remain hydrated.
Meanwhile, night temperature recorded an increase at most places in Kashmir Valley on Friday even as the weatherman has forecast the possibility of light to moderate rains in the next few days.
Srinagar recorded a low of 23.6 degree Celsius against 22.4 degree Celsius on the Thursday night. The temperature, he said, was around 7 degree Celsius above normal during this time of the year for the summer capital.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu National highway recorded a low of 21.6 degree Celsius on the second consecutive day on Friday. However, the temperature was 6.0 degrees below normal, he said.
Tourist resort of Pahalgam settled at 17.2 degree Celsius against 15.4 degree Celsius on the previous night, while Kokernag recorded a low of 19.1 and Gulmarg recorded a low of 14.0 degree Celsius.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara town recorded a low of 21.1 degree Celsius against 19.6 degree Celsius Thursday night, the MeT official said.
