Elder Abuse | | | Elder abuse is a problem that exists in both developing and developed countries yet is typically under-reported globally. Even though the exact extent of elder mistreatment is unknown, its social and moral significance is obvious. This is a serious issue that needs to be pondered upon. Many elders suffer silently even without complaining. Even if they complain no one pays any heed towards the issues confronting them. According to the United Nations by 2030, the number of persons aged 60 years or over is projected to grow by 38%, from 1 billion to 1.4 billion, globally outnumbering youth, and this increase will be the greatest and the most rapid in the developing world. There is as such need for recognizing that greater attention needs to be paid to the specific challenges affecting older persons, including in the field of human rights. It’s the first and foremost duty of the younger generation to take care of their elders. The youngsters need to remember that it’s the elders who strived for their welfare when they were growing. The elders cannot be left to fend on their own. The need of the hour is to come up with a strategy that can contribute towards reducing elder abuse. The other steps that can be taken through the social welfare sector, through the provision of legal, financial, and housing support. Public education and awareness campaigns along with detection and treatment of victims by primary healthcare workers can also prove helpful in this regard. Above all, people should address geriatric problems on their own and treat the elders as assets to be respected and care for them. History stands testimony to the fact that the society which doesn’t respect its elders ends up getting ruined and scattered. The charity has to begin from home. Every individual needs to understand his responsibility towards his parents and grandparents. If the adults don’t give respect to their elders at home it’s quite obvious that once they become old their children will treat them in the same way. The government also needs to play its role and needs to come up with preventive measures to prevent the abuse of elders. It needs to follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization aimed at preventing elder abuse. |
