Assembly polls clamor grows | | | In the recently concluded national executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the leaders from J&K unit of the party reportedly suggested that the assembly elections in the Union Territory should be held without any further delay. The concerns that were flagged by the BJP leaders included the emergence of Aam Aadmi Party in Jammu and PAGD announcing its decision to contest the polls jointly. The BJP leaders are aware of the fact that many small and big parties are trying to make inroads in Jammu region and if the elections are delayed it can hamper the prospects of BJP that had won 25 out of 37 assembly seats in Jammu region in the 2014 assembly elections. The Centre has already sounded the poll bugle and there is a possibility about elections being held in J&K in a few months. The assembly and parliamentary constituencies have been redrawn in Jammu and Kashmir and the political scenario has changed completely. Getting the Chief Minister’s post is no more going to be a cake walk for Kashmir based parties. These parties won’t find it easy to even win the seats in the Valley as the parties like Apni Party and Peoples Conference can prove to be the tough competitors. The BJP leaders in the national executive meeting have raised a valid point i.e. if the polls are delayed it would provide opposition with a chance to make inroads into the citadels of the saffron party and could put the BJP in a tight spot in Jammu region, including Doda, Poonch, Rajouri and Kishtwar districts. At present the AAP is just making an effort to establish its foothold in the Jammu region and if it gets some more time it can establish itself in at least a few areas. The local BJP leaders are also aware of the fact that people of Jammu are not that happy with their performance and if the voters get an alternative they can turn the tables on the BJP. The forthcoming assembly elections in J&K would set the tone for the next phase of politics in the Union Territory. How things unfurl remains to be seen but one thing is for sure that if the assembly elections are delayed it will help the opposition and not the BJP. |
