First-time in J&K history, political party collapses without contesting polls | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 17: The merger of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Movement (JKPM) with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has scripted a new chapter in political history as it was the first political party that was formed and finished without contesting any election. With much fanfare and publicity, the JKPM was launched on March 17, 2019, by IAS officer Shah Faesal with a promise of an “end to a corrupt system and work towards a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir issue.” Hundreds of his supporters thronged the launch venue in Srinagar’s Rajbagh chanting the party slogan: ‘ Ab Hawah Badlegi’ (Now winds will change directions). Shah Faesal was joined by former minister Javed Mustafa Mir and JNU leader Sheila Rashid. A year after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories (UTs) Shah Faesal stepped down as the President of JKPM on August 11, 2020. “Shah Faesal had informed State Executive members that he is not in a position to continue with political activities and wants to be freed from responsibilities of the organization,” said an official release of the JKPM. After Shah Faesal resigned from JKPM, former minister Javid Mustafa Mir was appointed as president of the party. On September 26, 2021, Javid Mustafa Mir resigned from the party's presidentship and also its basic membership. Javaid Mustafa Mir, a former minister in the Mehbooba Mufti-led BJP-PDP coalition government, informed that he has resigned as the JKPM president and also as its basic member. On July 14, 2022, the president and other office-bearers of the JKPM merged with the AAP. Delhi Food and Supplies Minister Imran Hussain said the Jammu and Kashmir People's Movement (JKPM) has merged with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with "almost" all of its office-bearers joining the ranks with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. The JKPM leaders joined the AAP in the presence of the party national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. |
