Organise blood donation camps | | | A few years ago blood donation camps were common in Jammu and Kashmir. There were many organizations that used to create awareness about how crucial blood donation is for saving lives at critical times. However, in the recent past blood donation camps in J&K have become rare. It’s an established fact that blood transfusion is a crucial component of health care across the globe. It contributes to saving millions of lives each year in both routine and emergency conditions. It actually plays a pivotal role in increasingly complex medical and surgical interventions. In fact it is directly responsible for dramatic improvement in the life expectancy and quality of life of patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions. The need of the hour is to create awareness about the importance of blood donation. Healthy people need to come forward and donate blood for those who may need it at crucial times. Patients who require transfusion as part of their clinical management have the right to expect that sufficient blood will be available to meet their needs and to receive the safest blood possible. However, many patients still die or suffer unnecessarily because they do not have access to safe blood transfusion. The timely availability of safe blood and blood products is essential in all health facilities in which transfusion is performed, but in many developing and transitional countries there is a widespread shortfall between blood requirements and blood supplies. Jammu and Kashmir needs to become self reliant vis-à-vis blood stock. It has been observed that if a patient requires blood his attendants are asked to arrange the blood in exchange. Until he doesn’t arrange a donor the blood is not provided. This practice needs to be discouraged as on many occasions the attendants have to pay the donor for donating the blood. The voluntary organizations need to wake up and arrange blood donation camps more regularly. The culture of helping each other needs to be encouraged. The society needs to do it on its own rather than waiting for the government to organize blood donation camps. |
