Assembly elections in J&K likely to held with Gujarat, Himachal | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 19: A letter written by Election Commission India has raised hope that assembly polls in J&K are likely to be held with Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Senior Principal Secretary of the Election Commission of India Narendra N Butolia has written a letter regarding the summar revision of last part of electoral rolls relating to service voters with reference to 01.10.2022 as the qualifying date in the States of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. This letter is a clear indication that ECI is seriously thinking to conduct assembly polls in J&K with Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh where elections will be held before December 2022. “Consequent upon amendment in Section 14 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 by Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021 and corresponding modifications in the rules of Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, as notified vide notifications dated 30th December 2021 and 17th June 2022 respectively, electoral rolls will be revised with reference to four qualifying dates, namely, 1st January, 1“ April, 1st July, and 1st October of the year”, the letter reads. In light of above changes in law and this being election year for the States of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the Election Commission has ordered special summary revision of electoral rolls with reference to 01.10.2022 as the qualifying date in order to provide an opportunity to all eligible young persons, who are attaining the age of 18 years between 1st January 2022 and 1st October 2022. All other eligible citizens who are not enrolled, to get themselves registered in the electoral roll and use voting right in the impending general election to legislative assemblies. |
