NC, Azad group inching towards pre-poll alliance in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 30: Statements given by top leadership of the National Conference and some leaders of the Azad-led party have fuelled speculations about the pre-poll alliance between the two parties. Although Ghulam Nabi Azad has yet to announce the format of his new political outfits, his loyalists are dropping hints to ally with the secular parties of J&K. Not only loyalists of Azad, even the top leadership of the National Conference is also giving positive statements about the decision of the Azad to quit Congress. In a question about what effect it would have on political parties if former senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad is forming his own political party, former Chief Minister and president of National Conference Dr. Farooq Abdullah said “I am happy he is going to form a national level party…let us see it is just a beginning, time will tell”. Earlier Dr. Abdullah observed that Azad was not getting due respect and honour in the party that he was getting earlier. “Must not be getting respect, love showered upon him earlier. Congress was taken aback when 23 leaders wrote the letter. But it's happened before, Congress came back stronger. The country needs a strong opposition,” stated Farooq Abdullah on the resignation of Ghulam Nabi Azad. “It is sad and scary” to see the grand old party implode", Omar Abdullah has stated. “Long rumoured to be in the offing but a body blow to the Congress none the less. Perhaps the senior most leader to quit the party in recent times, his resignation letter makes for very painful reading. It's sad, and quite scary, to see the grand old party of India implodes", Omar tweeted. Meanwhile, two days after veteran leader Taj Mohiuddin sought to distance from BJP, former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand today ruled out an alliance with the BJP in the run up to the next assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led party would try to bring secular parties on a single platform for the restoration of statehood and rights under Article 370. “The new party led by Azad will try to bring secular-minded regional parties, from both Jammu and Kashmir regions, under a single platform. We will try to work out a strong front to provide good governance to the people, work for the restoration of statehood and the rights which were guaranteed under Article 370,” Chand, an Azad loyalist, told reporters here. “The issue of Article 370 is before the Supreme Court which will decide about it. However, when our government is formed, we will fight for the restoration of all the rights guaranteed under the Constitution provision,” Chand said, expressing confidence that the Azad-led party will also form the government at the Centre by having an alliance with regional parties in different states of the country. |
