Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 9: In a major breakthrough -exposing the new modus operandi of the car lifters operating in Jammu and Kashmir, the JK Police have discovered that such target vehicles are instantly disassembled for resale in the “grey markets.”
Officials said the matter got exposed after police received the complaint of Tata Sumo vehicle having being stolen from Zadibal area of Srinagar and was recovered “fully dismantled two days later.”
Sources said the vehicle was stolen on September 7 and the owner had filed a complaint at the nearby Police Station.
Sources said using electronic surveillance the police got leads about the accused involved in the crime.
A man from north Kashmir’s Handwara, who was caught along with two others for the offence, took the police to Sumbal area where the vehicle was found in dismantled condition.
“If the case had taken a few more hours, the spare parts of the stolen vehicle could have been sold somewhere and it would be difficult to trace out the vehicle for obvious reasons,” said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
The official said it was a “new criminal trick, which the car lifters have adopted to first steal and then resell such vehicles in full of spare.”
The official said the police was probing if the stolen vehicle parts were being exchanged for sale.
“What is being probed at the moment is that if the stolen vehicles are sold as spare parts or the parts are exchanged,” the official said.
Explaining his point the official said: “We are ascertaining that if the body of one stolen vehicle has engine of another stolen vehicle and tyres of another one and this makes the case quite complex and interesting,” the official said. He said the case has been registered vide No 61/2022 U/S 379 IPC at the Police Station Zadibal.
“One Sumo was stolen 2 day back, FIR No. 61/2022 U/S 379 IPC was registered in P/S Zadibal, after strenuous efforts 1 among 3 thieves namely Mushtaq Bhat R/o Handwara was arrested and on his disclosure vehicle was recovered at Sumbal in dismantled condition which was being changed,” said an official at the concerned thana.
