Azad Joins Chorus | | | Former J&K chief minister and the president of Democratic Azad Party (DAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad, too has raised the boogey of Article 370 and has stated that he would try to get Article back. It appears that he too has been swayed away by the political compulsions as the leaders around him are raising this issue again and again. When Azad had launched DAP after saying goodbye to the Congress Party, he had minced no words to make it clear that the Article 370 won’t come back and he cannot bring it back. Azad had stated that he doesn’t want to mislead the people by raising hollow slogans. But it seems that he has understood that in J&K politics cannot survive without raising the hollow slogans. National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, two main opponents of Azad’s party, have not given up on the restoration of Article 370. It appears that both the parties want to make J&K’s abrogated special status as the plank and fight the forthcoming elections. Azad has launched a new party and it seems that he is playing safe. After August 5, 2019, when J&K’s special status was abrogated, the political scenario in the Himalayan region changed completely. No party would find it easy to win the forthcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory. Forming a government is not going to be an easy task for any party. Azad is aware about the challenges that elections in J&K would pose. He wants to join the chorus and be among the ones who are trying to sell whatever they can to remain relevant as the politicians as such have lost ground due to the unprecedented development that J&K has witnessed during the past three years. One can understand that Azad is facing political compulsions but he should ensure that he doesn’t mislead the people and tell them the truth that only a party with a two-thirds majority in Parliament can restore J&K’s special status which was revoked by the BJP led Government in the Centre in 2019. For time being it looks impossible that any other party would form a government in the Centre as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as the strongest leader that India has had in the recent years. Azad needs to stick to the truth rather than joining the chorus. |
