KVK trains women farmers on natural farming

REASI, Oct 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies Jammu (SKUAST-J) imparted vocational training on natural farming here today at Malad village of Pouni block in Reasi district of J&K which was enthuastically attended by a number of women farmers of the area.
The programme was organized under the dynamic stewardship of Vice Chancellor, Prof. JP Sharma and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof. SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Sr. Scientist and Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that indiscriminate use of chemicals in the crops is causing different kinds of ailments to the human beings and also deteriorating the soil health so there is need of natural farming.
He added that natural farming can be done with the minimum resources which are already available at farmers home. He elucidated the benefits of the adoption of natural farming and added that for a healthy society, quality and healthy food is required and natural farming can play a significant role for the production of safe and healthy food. He informed that natural farming is helpful to balance the agro-ecological system. He narrated that Reasi district of J&K has huge potential in natural farming and the farmers can generate more income by producing the safe and healthy food through natural farming. He emphasised on the cluster approach for natural farming. He further added that crops grown through natural farming are healthier than conventionally grown crops and are more profitable. He narrated that natural farming is the need of the hour and informed that it is beneficial for the maintenance soil health, human health, animal health and environment. He discussed on the transition strategy to natural farming and narrated that natural farming is agro-ecology based farming which integrates crops, trees, livestock and functional biodiversity. He highlighted the importance of farm fields as a source of organic matter and spoke on the usage of indigenous seed and bioinoculants as the catalyst required for natural farming. He expressed that natural farming is a promising means of reducing the dependence of farmers on external inputs, reducing the cost of cultivation and increasing the income of the farmers. He demonstrated the technique of preparation of Jeevamrit and Beejamrit and other inputs required for natural farming. He also gave a detail view on the practices such as mulching, Acchadana and various other biocontrol agents required for the natural farming. He also discussed on Atam Nirbar Krishi and emphasised on the adoption of natural farming for more returns. During the programme the participants were also guided on the cultivation of vegetables through natural farming. The participants asked various quarries regarding the natural farming which were answered satisfactorily by the KVK scientist. The programme was assisted by Manohar Lal.
