No party in comfort zone
11/14/2022 11:14:34 PM

The final draft of the revised electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir for the maiden assembly elections in the Union Territory is likely to be completed by the end of this month.
The revision of electoral rolls had commenced after the completion of the Delimitation Commission submitted its report to redraw the assembly and parliamentary constituencies in J&K.
The finalization of revised electoral rolls is the penultimate step before elections. It means that the polls in Jammu and Kashmir could be held soon after the electoral rolls are finalized.
The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014 and since then the political scenario in the region has changed completely. J&K’s special status has been scrapped. It has been transformed into a Union Territory. The delimitation exercise has brought both Jammu and Kashmir regions at par vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats.
No political party can claim that it’s placed in a comfort zone and can form a government on its own. The dominance of Kashmir based political parties has ended as the time and the political equations have changed.
Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, during his last visit to Jammu and Kashmir had announced that polls in the Union Territory would be held soon. After his announcement election preparations were expedited.
Political parties in J&K have started gearing up for the polls. Leaders have started addressing political rallies and the parties which till the recent past didn’t talk about restoration of Article 370 too have joined the chorus.
But the leaders of all the political parties are aware of the fact that Article 370 won’t come back. They are raking up this issue just to keep the electorate busy.
Politicians need to remember that after the scrapping of Article 370, J&K has witnessed tremendous development and people are no more interested in seeking the return of J&K’s special status.
Political parties will have to come up with new ideas and slogans to lure the voters as J&K’s transition into a Union Territory has set the new benchmarks of governance.
People have come to know what governance means and they cannot be misled by raising hollow slogans.
Elections in J&K are in offing and political parties will spring surprises to lure the voters.
