JK Assembly elections ‘whispers getting loud’ in Delhi | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 11: Even as the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been “long awaited”, various stakeholders are discussing it in the national capital hinting at a decision on the crucial issue soon. Sources said at the meeting recently chaired by the Union Home Secretary in the national capital on security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the issue of security for “holding democratic activities in a big way” was discussed threadbare. Sources said the hint of the “democratic activities” was to take the feedback from the security agencies about the ground situation for holding of the Assembly elections. Sources said the feedback from the security establishment has remained satisfactory. While the decision on the holding of elections in Jammu and Kashmir is to be taken by the Election Commission of India, source said the political parties at the national level have decided to pick up the issue at the ongoing winter session of the Parliament. Sources said in the wake of the Parliament session, a meeting called by Congress, President, Mallikarjun Kharge in the national capital on December 7, was attended by National Conference, President, Dr Farooq Abdullah. Sources said apart from others, TMC and Aam Aadmi Party leaders also attended the meeting and are understood to have resolved to pick up the holding of Assembly elections in Kashmir in the Parliament’s ongoing session. The same day, the Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai said that the security situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir. Rai, while informing the Rajya Sabha, said there has been substantial decline in terror incidents from 417 in 2018 to 229 in 2021. In October, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted once the Election Commission completes the exercise of publishing the revised electoral rolls. Shah was addressing a public rally in Baramulla district of north Kashmir. “We have started a political process. I want to assure you that once the work of publishing electoral rolls by the Election Commission is completed, elections will be conducted with full transparency and your own elected representatives will govern here,” the Union minister had said. “All these developments make a strong case for holding of Assembly elections but the final decision has to be taken by the Election Commission of India,” said an analyst. |
