As cultural Diplomat of India to Mauritius, Balwant Thakur headed world's biggest cultural centre i.e., Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, High Commission of India. In a short span Balwant Thakur created a history by holding 175 major events aimed at promoting the bilateral relations between India and Mauritius. Balwant Thakur's tenure in Mauritius will be remembered as the golden era of Indian cultural happenings in Mauritius. His most noteworthy contribution was the creation of inhouse events involving Mauritian artists. He strongly believed in the fact that the best way to lay a strong foundation of Indian culture is to train the local artists in Indian forms and then showcase them in a series of events. During his stay in Mauritius being a top professional of India, he introduced many new programmes and initiatives and made a new beginning of professional handling of culture. He introduced new concept of mega events showcasing culture on big canvas spectacles like 'Nritya Samagam', 'Sangeet Sangam', 'Anhad', 'Tabla Samagam', 'Bhartiya Rang Utsav', 'Colors of India' 'Sangeet-Nritya Utsav', 'Nritya Ki Jugalbandi' 'Natya Parva', 'Sahitya Sangam', 'Rang Samvaad' and many more featuring more than 100 artists in each event. Fact remains that this world's biggest cultural centre was defunct for many years and Balwant Thakur was handpicked by the Ministry of External Affairs Government of India to revive this amazing cultural space. He not only upgraded it's infrastructure but vibrated it with a series of events and today one can say with pride that Indian cultural centre is the ultimate destination of art lovers and Balwant Thakur turned this into the ultimate cultural attraction buzzing with magnificent events. In connection with the celebrations of 75 years of India's independence in Mauritius, he organised a historic Art Concleve-2022 featuring 75 Mauritian artists who created exclusive artworks portraying their vision of India. Never ever in the history of Mauritius 75 artists came under one roof to display their ultimate artistic creations. This historic art show is going to be remembered for decades to come. Both Balwant Thakur and his wife Deepika B. Thakur were felicitated by His Excellency the President of Mauritius and first lady of Mauritius Sayukta Roopun at the State House. Wishing Balwant Thakur all good luck for his future endeavours, the President of the Republic of Mauritius appreciated his immense contribution in strengthening the cultural ties between two friendly nations and hoped that he will continue to contribute his creativity for the larger cultural welfare of both the nations. |
