Empowering tribals in J&K
12/15/2022 11:23:54 PM

The bill to grant Schedule Tribe status to the Pahari speaking community is likely to be introduced in the ongoing session of the Parliament.
Once the bill is passed by the Parliament it would grant ST status to Pahari, Padri, Koli and Gada Brahmin communities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government fulfilled the long pending demand of the Pahari community by granting ST status to it. For 70-years Pahari community was given a lollipop by the successive regimes but the Modi led dispensation fulfilled its commitment.
While addressing a rally in Jammu’s Rajouri town in October this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had promised that the Pahari-speaking people of J&K will get Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. And the government has kept its promise.
Paharis are the first linguistic group to get Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in the country. To give it a final shape the Bill will be passed by the Parliament in the ongoing winter session.
History stands testimony to the fact that members of Gujjar, Bakerwal and Pahari communities have played a crucial role in J&K’s development. Their contributions have always been acknowledged towards the society by describing them as the prime movers of progress. The community members have taught everyone the values of co-existence, oneness, harmony, and sustainable living.
After the abrogation of Article 370 the government has laid special emphasis on beneficiary-oriented schemes for the members of tribal communities in J&K. Apart from implementing the Forest Rights Act several other schemes have been started to empower these communities.
Paharis, Gujjars and Bakerwals believe that they were treated as vote banks by the former political regimes and were treated as second fiddles as the dispensations till 2019 never made a sincere attempt to uplift these communities.
During the past three years new avenues have been opened up for the members of these communities. Besides providing them with reservations in government jobs and other sectors the tribals are being provided equal opportunity in every field.
Their long struggle to get equal rights has been completed. In Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah they have found true leaders, who have provided them with everything they deserved.
