Revive Village Defence Committees | | | Voices to revive Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in frontier areas of Jammu region are becoming shriller. Recent cold blooded murders of six civilians by terrorists at Dhangri village in Rajouri district have once again brought to fore the ugly face of terror and the revival of VDCs can give a befitting reply to the terrorists, who on the directions of their bosses sitting across the Line of Control are out to kill the innocents. The VDCs were set up in the mid-1990s in mountainous areas of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri, Reasi, Kathua, and Poonch districts of the Jammu region. Later VDCs were constituted in the plains of Jammu, especially in border villages to check infiltration. But these committees were disarmed during the tenures of the political regimes. The VDCs had played a pivotal role in tackling the terrorists and had led to the elimination of terrorism from the areas close to the Line of Control. After the Rajouri terror attack, the Union Home Ministry has directed the J&K Government to expedite the process to revive the VDCs. According to the media reports J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is likely to chair an important meeting in New Delhi about revival of VDCs. The Union Home Ministry has already given its nod for providing arms and stipend to the VDC members so that the terrorists being sent into J&K from across the LoC don’t get a free run. After the VDCs were formed in the mid nineties members of these committees acted as eyes and ears of the security forces and helped them in neutralizing dreaded terrorists active in the hilly areas of Jammu region. As the terrorism is on its last legs in J&K the terrorist handlers are trying to revive the conflict by attacking innocent civilians and their moves need to be repelled. Reviving VDCs would help the security forces to thwart the designs of the terrorists as their attacks can be foiled by the armed VDC members. The acts of cowardice by the terrorists deserve a befitting reply and the government needs to speed up the process of providing arms to ex-servicemen and the youth who can defend their villages from the terrorists. |
