Changing lives of farmers | | | Last week Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, announced that this decade belongs to horticulture and agriculture sectors, and a plan worth Rs 5013 crore has been formulated to bring a significant change in the lives of the huge population linked with the farming sector in Jammu and Kashmir. He also said that policies through ‘holistic development’ plan have laid the foundations for a ‘sea change’ in the economic growth of J&K. After the abrogation of Article 370, the government has focused on uplifting the agriculture sector and making lives easier for the farmers. Many schemes have been launched for the farmers to increase their yields and double their incomes. During the past three years farmers have been taught to incorporate technology with the farming techniques so that they can take advantage of the new methods and techniques that have been made available in the recent past. The government has introduced Agristack, a collection of technologies and digital databases proposed by the Central Government which focuses on farmers and the agricultural sector. In order to create Agristack, the central agriculture department has finalized the core concept of “India Digital Ecosystem of Agriculture (IDEA)” which lays down a framework for Agristack. The Agristack is tipped to become a basic tool of introduction of modern practices and is expected to give “extraordinary” results in terms of both the quality and quantity of the agriculture produce. Many initiatives like Agristack have been rolled out in the recent past to turn the agriculture sector in J&K vibrant. The weather predictions have helped the farmers to plan up their future course of action. More and more tools are being made available to mitigate the weather vagaries and efforts are on to ensure that income of the farmers doubles in the coming days. In the near future the government is planning to implement at least 29 projects, approved by Apex Committee for Holistic Development of Agriculture and Allied sectors. The steps that have been taken during the past three years by the government have infused new life into the agriculture sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides focusing on framing the new schemes have been devised to turn dairy farming and other related fields into revenue generating units. The good work started by the administration needs to be taken to its logical end. |
