SKUAST-J organizes millets promotion programme | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 9: In a bid to commemorate International Year of Millets-2023, a one day farmers training cum awareness programme was organized by All India Coordinated Research Project on Dryland Agriculture at Advanced Centre for Rainfed Agriculture, Rakh Dhiansar under the aegis of SKUAST Jammu, wherein more than 30 numbers of farmers and farm women from the domain area have participated. The purpose of training programme was to make aware the farming community about the importance of millets and to sensitize about the various cultivation practices in order to boost the millets productivity in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention here that ACRA SKUAST Jammu is the nodal research unit which undertakes the research for generation of location specific rainfed technologies for Jammu region. At the outset, Dr. A.P. Singh, Chief Scientist and Incharge AICRPDA briefed about the importance of millets and various research initiatives w.r.t millets being taken up at ACRA, Rakh Dhiansar. While addressing the participants, he further told the participants that substantial funds has already been allocated for the promotion and development of millets in UT of J&K under policy for the holistic development of agriculture. Dr. Jai Kumar, Sr. Scientist (Agronomy) briefed about the importance of millets w.r.t to their heath benefits . He also impressed to incorporate at least one millet crop in their crop rotation , as millets are also known for their adaptive capacity under adverse environmental conditions which is a regular phenomena in kandi belt of Jammu. Dr Vikas Gupta, Jr. Scientist (agronomy) shared his research experiences while working on pearl millets and he also briefed the farmers about the scientific cultivation of pearl millet. Dr. Brinder Singh , Sr. Scientist (Soil Science) discussed about the integrated use of nutrient sources to realize optimum economic returns in millet crop production, beside improvement in soil health. Dr. Sonika Jamwal, Sr. Scientist (Plant Pathology) briefed the farmers about various integrated disease management techniques and laid special emphasis on the use of biorationals and plant extracts for management of various insects in various millet crops The farmers appreciated the efforts of the AICRPDA, scientists and also assured to grow at least one millet crop in the ensuing Kharif season. The programme ended up with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Rohit Sharma , Scientist (Agronomy). |
