Kashmir upper reaches receive fresh snow, rains lash plains

Srinagar, Feb 9: Upper reaches of Kashmir valley including tourist hot spots of Gulmarg and Sonamarg received light to moderate fresh snowfall while the plains were lashed by rains throwing normal life out of gear on Thursday.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, received mixed rain and snow disrupting normal life. It was still raining at present in Srinagar and its adjoining areas when this report was filed.
Ski resorts of Gulmarg, Tangmarg and its adjoining areas in north Kashmir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir received moderate snowfall today and it was still snowing at these places till this report was filed.
Some upper reaches of Bandipora including Razdan top and Sadhna Top in Kupwara also received yet another spell of fresh moderate snowfall. Mountainous passes of Pir Panjal Range in south Kashmir also experienced fresh snowfall today.
An independent weather observer Faizan Arif said that forecast of rain and snow activity would intensify during the late evening and will continue till late tonight in various parts of the Kashmir valley.
He said the possibility of wet weather could continue tomorrow with the major intensity during the afternoon.
The weather will gradually improve from Saturday, he added.
Srinagar recorded a low of 0.8 degree Celsius on Thursday against minus 0.1 degree Celsius the previous night.
It was 1.2 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the season. It also received traces during the past 24 hours.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded at minus 0.8 degree Celsius against minus 1.8 degree Celsius a day ago. It was 0.7 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the year.
The temperature shows an improvement in the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, recorded at minus 4.2 on Thursday against 6.5 degree Celsius recorded on Wednesday. It was 2.5 degree Celsius above normal for the tourist resort during this period of the season. It also received 0.4mm of rainfall and 0.1 Cms snowfall during the past 24 hours till 0830hours today.
Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir had a low of minus 2.4 degree Celsius against minus 7.6 degree Celsius the previous night. It was 3.8 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the season for the valley of shepherds.
Kokernag had a low of minus 0.6 degree Celsius which was 1.4 degree above normal during this period of the season for the picnic spot of south Kashmir.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara had a low of 2.3 degree Celsius against minus 1.9 degree Celsius recorded a day ago. It was 4.3 degrees above normal during this period of the season, MeT office said.
