BJP starts preparations for maiden assembly polls in J&K | Deputes independent teams to get feedback about potential candidates in each constituency | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 14: Although Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that Election Commission has to take a final call on holding assembly elections in J&K, BJP has already started the groundwork for the first assembly polls in the Union Territory. Without any announcement, the party leadership has started the exercise to prepare panels of three potential candidates from each constituency of J&K. “Although panels will be made for all the constituency, the party will focus on 43 assembly seats of Jammu province and over a dozen seats of Kashmir Valley”, sources said. Sources said that instead of involving local party leaders in finalizing candidates, the BJP leadership has hired some private organizations to conduct a constituency-wise survey and suggest names of winnable candidates. Insiders said that the BJP high-command is conducting grassroots level before finalizing candidates in Jammu province. Sources said that the constituency-level survey was started after the visit of BJP’s national general secretary organization of BJP B L Santhosh who visited Jammu on the second week of January. During his visit, B L Santhosh had asked the party leaders to gear up for polls. At a meeting with senior party leaders of the Union territory, he emphasized strengthening party units at booth and assembly constituency levels. He asked the party in-charges to focus on winning the election in their respective areas. The meeting came days after senior party leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah held deliberations with party functionaries from Jammu and Kashmir in Delhi. The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be held this year, though there has been no official announcement yet. BL Santhosh, while addressing the meeting, emphasized strengthening all the party units putting strenuous stress on the booth management and assembly constituency levels. He asked the party "Prabharis" to concentrate on winning the election in their allocated areas ensuring their extended tours in those areas. Jammu and Kashmir is without an elected government since June 2018 when BJP dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed by the resignation of the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. |
