Winning polls, anyone’s bet | | | Union Home Minister Amit Shah has once again reiterated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) would take a call on the timings of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir and the statehood would be restored at an appropriate time. The electoral rolls in J&K have been finalized and the preparations are underway to hold the elections in the Union Territory. Political parties are eagerly waiting for the elections as they are aware that it’s the only way to make a comeback. After the abrogation of Article 370 political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir has changed completely. The hegemony of Kashmir based parties has ended after the redrawing of the assembly constituencies. Jammu and Kashmir regions have been brought at par vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats. Issues like autonomy and self-rule have become obsolete. New political parties appearing on the scene, especially in Kashmir, have thrown the field open for everyone. In the Jammu region, Congress Party has failed to play the role of a vibrant opposition. It has allowed the small regional parties to chip in and fill in the void. The Centre has put the ball in the court of the Election Commission of India and the poll body may announce the polls date soon. Speculations were rife that the elections could be held in J&K by September this year. Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have been preparing the ground as the politicians know very well that winning elections won’t be a cakewalk this time around. The electorate cannot be taken for granted as they have become aware about their rights and easily differentiate between a mere rhetoric and genuine issues raised by the politicians. Not a single person in Jammu and Kashmir is ready to buy the slogan that Kashmir based parties will get Article 370 back. They are aware it’s nothing but a slogan which politicians are raising to lure the voters. More than slogans, people are interested in development and their welfare. The party which would promise development, peace and prosperity has a better chance of attracting the voters. The realistic slogan at this point of time is seeking restoration of statehood. The Union Home Minister hasn’t fixed any deadline for it but has promised that J&K’s statehood would be given back at the appropriate time. |
