Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Reasi promotes Lettuce Cultivation

REASI, Feb 18: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating the farmers on the organic lettuce cultivation in Reasi distt. of J&K so as to increase the income of the farmers. Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that KVK, Reasi is endeavoring to enhance the income and employment among the farmers by the new interventions in the district. He said that KVK has experimented on Chinese Yellow, Grand Rapid and Iceberg Lettuce varieties in Rabi season in both open and protected conditions with excellent results. He added that lettuce crop is thriving well in the environment and farmers can grow it commercially to get better income. He added that demand of lettuce crops is increasing in the market and farmers can fetch more money by growing it. He informed that lettuce is an important salad crops and has multiple health benefits. He said that lettuce is a very good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. He informed that lettuce lowers the cholesterol levels, protects neuronal cells of the body, prevents osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, age-related macular disease in the elderly people, cancers, Alzheimer's disease etc. He informed that lettuce has low calorie content, zero fat and is a good source of chlorophyll, Vitamins A, B1, B2, C and K, folic acid and manganese. He expressed that lettuce crop has good marketing potential as the distt. is visited by millions of pilgrims and there are number of hotels/restaurants at Katra where there lettuce crop can be consumed. He added that KVK, Reasi is emphasising on organic farming and upgrading the knowledge of the farmers for the preparation of organic formulations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, Panchgavya, mulching etc. so as to reduce the cost of cultivation and produce the quality food. He also informed that KVK is also promoting quality organic lettuce production through hydroponics technology which is an innovative technology. It saves labour and water.
