To expose Cong’s “duplicity” Govt mulling to sanction pension for victims of 1975 emergency | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 23: The government is seriously thinking about sanctioning pensions to those who were arrested or faced atrocities during the emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975. Although no official statement has been issued in this regard, a proposal has already been formulated to “compensate” victims of Congress’s emergency. Sources said that the government is trying to kill two birds with one stone. By granting pensions to emergency victims the government will recognize their sacrifices to protect democracy in the country second Congress will be exposed for its duplicity in bulldozing democratic institutions in the country. Reports said that as many as 1300 people were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir during the emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Credible sources informed that the Jammu and Kashmir government has initiated the exercise to collect the details of people who were detained in the erstwhile state during the emergency. Reports said that the decision will be taken to grant pension as a gesture to recognize struggle of those people to save democracy during the 21-month emergency period. “Apart from this, those people who did not have Jammu and Kashmir domicile, but were arrested in the erstwhile state and jailed Emergency would also be entitled to the pension,”, sources said. “They added that government may also give pensions to widows of those who were put behind the bars. Source informed that the police officials have been asked to collect details of such people at the earliest. “Police officials have been asked to collect details and simultaneously the administration has also written to the police of other states to share details,” they said adding that the Jammu and Kashmir government will soon announce criteria for eligibility and a decision in this regard. It is pertinent to mention here that similar decisions were also announced by the government of Maharashtra and Haryana. In year 2018, Maharashtra government decided to award a monthly pension of Rs 10,000 to those persons who were jailed during the Emergency and in the same Haryana government led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar approved the scheme for granting monthly pension of Rs 10,000 to those residents of state who had actively participated during the period of emergency, that is from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977 and had faced imprisonment under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), 1971 and Defence of India Act, 1962. |
