Amid ‘political dormancy’ in J&K, Abdullahs focus on South India
3/2/2023 10:46:47 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 2: Amid a “political dormancy” in Jammu and Kashmir, J&K’s grand old party, it seems is focusing on south India where the National Conference actually has no vote bank for its home region.
On March 1, 2023, hundreds of supporters and a few opposition leaders, including National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, carrying gifts, lined up in Chennai to greet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on his 70th birthday.
Only four top leaders from the opposition apart from Dr Abdullah were present at the birthday party and they included Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Tejashwi Yadav, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
Dr Abdullah dropped a bombshell when he said there were chances for DMK top leader and Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin to become the Prime Minister if Opposition parties come together and win the general election in 2024.
On his arrival in Chennai to take part in the birthday bash of Stalin, Abdullah, when asked on prospective Prime Ministerial candidates said “A decision could be made on the best man to lead and unite the nation at the appropriate time after a win by a united opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.”
Asked on chances of Stalin becoming the Prime Minister, he told reporters: “Why not? Why can’t he become the Prime Minister?”
To a question on opposition unity, he said Stalin and DMK have done very well.
When the nation’s diversity is protected, then unity is guarded, he said. The Tamil Nadu’s ruling party has done well on nurturing Opposition and national unity.
Last year Dr Abdullah’s successor Omar Abdullah had also called on Stalin.
Observers say that Abdullahs want to speak on anything beyond Jammu and Kashmir. “It seems National Conference is more concerned about the South India than its own home territory because it wants to keep all options open,” said a political observer.
