Progressive Tax | | | Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently stated that nearly 80% of J&K’s population is exempted from the property tax and the common people should not pay any heed towards the misinformation campaign launched by some vested interests. According to the data provided by the officials there are around 5,20,000 houses in the cities of Jammu and Kashmir. Of these, 2,06,000 houses are less than 1000 sq ft and no tax is being imposed on them. There is no tax on 40% of the people living in cities, in rural and religious places. As many as 2,03,600 houses are less than 1500 sq ft and 80% of these households will have to pay less than Rs 600 per annum. This amount is one-tenth of the tax amount being paid in other States and Union Territories. As many as 46,000 out of 1,01,000 shops in city areas are less than 100 sq ft and they will have to pay up to Rs 700 per annum. Out of these 46,000 shops, 80% will have to pay Rs 600 per annum/ Rs 50 per month. Nearly 30,000 shops will have to pay taxes below Rs 2000 per annum and out of these, 20,000 will have to pay less than Rs 1500. Figures that have been provided by the officials substantiate their claims that the property tax has been calculated in a rational manner and poor won’t be hit. But the people owning palatial houses and big business establishments will have to pay according to the rates that have been fixed. Revenue which would be generated through the property tax will directly go into the accounts of the local bodies and will be used for the welfare of the people. Jammu and Kashmir is the last place in the country where the property tax has been imposed and it’s the lowest in the country. When the government announced its decision to impose the property tax in Jammu and Kashmir a few people raised hue and cry over its imposition. However, the government has made it clear that the property tax is no burden on the people and it’s a progressive tax. |
