Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 4: Even as team from the Union Home Ministry recently concluded its visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah held a closed-door meeting with a Bharatiya Janta Party leader from J&K. Sources said the BJP leader from JK apprised Shah about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir during the meeting that lasted for around an hour. The sources said the one-on-one meeting was held at the official residence of the Union Home Minister wherein the security scenario and democratic activities were discussed in particular. The sources said the visiting leader discussed in particular the issue of security of the BJP leaders in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of recent terror threats. Sources said the two also discussed the prospects for holding of the much-awaited Assembly elections as also the Urban Local body Polls. Sources said the “issue of holding of elections was discussed at length” and it was observed that the BJP was fully prepared for any such political activity. The sources said the leader from Jammu and Kashmir also apprised Shah about the public perception about the recent land eviction drive and the government decision to impose property tax. The sources said the Home Minister has been looking at diverse views about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and thus held the meeting. “From sending a team from the MHA for on the spot inspection of ground situation to holding a one on one meeting with his party cadres, he (Amit Shah) wants to look at the situation from all angles as something seems to be cooking up with regard to democratic activities,” said a party source in the know of the developments. Last month on February 13, the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah said that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will come up after the Assembly polls and that a call on the timing of elections will be taken by the Election Commission. In an exclusive interview to a wire agency, Shah also said there has been improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and terrorism-related figures were at their lowest. Shah said he cannot comment on the timing of the polls in Jammu and Kashmir. "I had clearly stated that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after elections. Process of preparation of voters' list is nearing completion in the UT. Now, the Election Commission has to take a call on elections," he said. |
