Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 6: Within days of its meeting with the Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah in New Delhi, the Bharatiya Janta Party has kickstarted its “massive outreach” in Jammu and Kashmir.
While a mega meeting of the party cadres was held in Srinagar on March 5, on March 6, the senior BJP leader Ashok Koul chaired a meeting in Anantnag. Sources said on March 7, the party would hold a similar event in Kulgam followed by more meetings in the coming days across the valley. A similar plan has been chalked out for Jammu.
Sources said Shah has told the BJP leaders from Jammu and Kashmir to intensify public outreach. A senior BJP leader, who spoke to the Early Times on the condition of anonymity, said “some major political activity is on the cards and this is why our party has opted for a massive public outreach.” He said the BJP leaders have been asked to get active in their respective constituencies.
While the rumor mills had been rife among the Kashmir-based political parties that there was possibility of Assembly elections soon, the BJP on Sunday hinted at the same at its convention held in the summer capital.
While addressing the meeting, Koul as per the party handout, “asked the party leaders to lay emphasis on strengthening the party at booth-level with assembly election in UT J&K slated to be announced any time in near future.”
The BJP has all of sudden intensified its political activities since last week when senior party leader Sunil Sharma called on the Union Home Minister at his New Delhi residence. The meeting had lasted for over an hour.
Last month, Shah said that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will come up after the Assembly polls and that a call on the timing of elections will be taken by the Election Commission.
In an exclusive interview to a wire agency, Shah said he cannot comment on the timing of the polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I had clearly stated that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after elections. Process of preparation of voters’ list is nearing completion in the UT. Now, the Election Commission has to take a call on elections,” he said.
