Drug seizures | | | The seizure of seven kilograms of heroin worth millions of rupees along with over Rs 2.30 crore in cash and some arms and ammunition in Mandi sector on March 3 has once again turned the spotlight on drug smuggling through Line of Control. A number of recoveries of drugs have been made in the recent past with police authorities maintaining that the drugs were mostly meant to be supplied among youth in Jammu and Kashmir along with neighbouring states. The sale proceeds of it were to be used for sustaining terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces are facing a new challenge where the drugs and weapons are smuggled from Pakistan together. While the weapons are delivered to the terrorists and the major part of the drug proceeds are returned to handlers across the border and the rest shared by the peddlers. The proceeds from the drugs trade are being utilised to keep terrorism alive in Jammu and Kashmir. The increasing use of the Line of Control and other border routes by narcotic smugglers is worrisome for J&K, which has been ravaged by the drug scourge recently. Even as the police and other security forces are thwarting attempts to push drugs into the J&K through various means including drones, all concerned agencies need to work in close coordination with each other to deter drug syndicates from using these areas for their nefarious purposes. It’s creditable that police and security forces are now keen to eradicate the menace. It appears easier said than done. It requires a lot of energy, dedication and resolve besides resources to meet the desired results. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly underlined the Government of India’s resolve to crush the drug menace across the country. Various agencies have time and again warned regarding the close link between drugs, black money and terror financing. In such a scenario, all concerned agencies should remember to remain alert when red flags are flying. There is also a need for inter-state cooperation and a meticulous probe is needed to expose the nexus between drug smugglers and some people who appear to be helping them. |
