Opposition in disarray | | | Attempts of National Conference (NC) to forge unity among the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have not yielded positive results. The All Party Meeting called by the NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday failed to evoke the desired response as Peoples Conference, Apni Party and newly floated Democratic Progressive Azad Party stayed away from the meeting. Except for Congress leader Raman Bhalla and Panthers Party leader Harsh Dev Singh, no prominent politician from the Jammu region attended the all party meeting. Just one day before the abrogation of Article 370, Kashmir based parties had formed Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) but the conglomerate crumbled under its own weight as its constituents pulled out from the alliance. At present PAGD comprises National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a few small parties. All the attempts of NC and PDP leadership to put up a collective front haven’t worked since 2019. The leaders of these parties are even finding it hard to keep their own flock together. Former J&K chief minister and NC vice-president, Omar Abdullah, has one many occasions shown that he is not interested in forging any alliance with the PDP. He has also tried telling his father Dr Farooq Abdullah to focus on his own party rather than the PAGD. Not many parties showing any interest in the all party meeting called by Dr Farooq Abdullah is an indication that the opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir will fight the assembly polls on their own. And no one will be given the role of a big brother. Regional parties in Jammu and Kashmir are looking for issues through which they can corner the Centre but these formations are not finding it easy. Politicians are aware that sooner or later assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir but it seems that they are running short of ideas about how to strike a chord with people. The opposition unity in Jammu and Kashmir looks difficult and all the regional parties will have to strive on their own to make their presence felt. The political scenario that has emerged during the past few years in J&K has brought an entirely new political setup to the fore where none of the opposition parties seem to be in control. |
