Rein in doctors | | | A doctor indulging in private practice despite claiming non-practicing allowance is a serious concern and it needs to be addressed. As reported by this newspaper some of senior residents and registrars deputed at Government Medical College Udhampur are allegedly indulging in private practice despite availing non-practicing allowances from the department. These doctors allegedly are examining patients in their private clinics rather than providing them with the consultation in the hospital. The Health Department needs to take a note and act against such erring professionals who are exploiting the patients for filling their own pockets. Private practice of doctors has always been a matter of debate in Jammu and Kashmir. Till date many attempts have been made to prevent the doctors from providing consultation to the patients at their private clinics. The government is even providing them with the non-practicing allowance but it seems that it has not stopped them from doing what they want. It’s high time for the authorties to halt the private practice by the doctors of government hospitals. The private practice by doctors has hit the functioning of the government hospitals across Jammu and Kashmir. In the year 2020, the J&K and Ladakh High Court had taken a serious note of the private practice of the doctors. It had expressed serious concern over doctors exploiting the poor patients, and had expressed dismay over government doctors being permitted to carry on with their private practice. The voices are becoming shriller to seek a ban on the private practice of the doctors. It is ironical that full-time government doctors are running private clinics depriving poor and underprivileged of essential health care. Many believe that the private practice has eaten away the J&K health institutions and is responsible for rising corruption in health and medical education. Doctors spend most of their time in private clinics and are not available in the hospitals. Their attention and time is directed towards their private clinics. Government doctors spending time at their private clinics has taken a heavy toll on poor patients visiting the hospitals. The government needs to frame a clear cut policy i.e. if the doctors want to carry on with private practice then they should quit their jobs and pave the way for the newcomers to serve the people. |
