GI tagging of Basohli paintings will safeguard intellectual property rights, promote art: Raman Suri
4/4/2023 11:20:58 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 4: "It is a matter of pride for the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, especially Basohli town, that the world-famous "Basohli Miniature Paintings" have received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, which will prevent the unauthorised use of these paintings, promote them at international level and also boost exports besides research".
This was stated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J&K Executive Member Raman Suri, who added that this was a long-pending demand of the artists, curators, painters, and people of Basohli and the dream has now been realised with efforts of The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), which initiated the process for GI tagging of Basohli paintings as well as Ladakh Wood Carving.
Raman Suri said, the famous Pahari miniature style of painting from Jammu's Kathua area, known for its use of bright and bold colours as well as peculiar facial forms, are known for their intricate work world over. This GI tag will now preserve the exclusiveness of these paintings and enable the artists to work with more dedication. This is the first product from Jammu region to get independent GI tag.
The BJP leader said, those who keep asking that what was the need of abrogating Article 370, must see how minor and major changes and developments are protecting the rights of people, especially artists and how this GI tag will transform the way Basohli paintings are marketed in the international arena. This is indeed a proud moment for J&K and we hope that all the exclusive paintings lying in the Archives or Museums of Jammu and Kashmir will also be included in the list of GI tags as soon as possible.
Raman Suri appreciated the move of The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) for initiating the process for GI tagging of nine products from Jammu region in consultation with the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom and taking the legal process to a right conclusion.
Raman Suri said that the GI tagging will prevent the unauthorised use of these products, maintain intellectual property rights, and increase their market value locally, nationally as well as internationally. He also greeted the people of Ladakh for getting GI tags for their wood works.
