Exploring unexplored | | | The government has been putting in all out efforts to explore the tourism potential of Jammu region. On Saturday Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the Tulip Garden at Sanasar situated amid lush green woods in Ramban district. It’s the first such park in Jammu Division. The garden is spread over 40 Kanals with 2.75 Lakh Tulip Bulbs of 25 different varieties. Jammu has got a vast tourism potential but it needs to be explored. Till August 5, 2019—when the Centre scrapped J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—not many efforts were put to explore the tourism potential of Jammu. For erstwhile political regimes, Kashmir always remained a priority and nothing much was done to put Jammu on the tourism map. The tourism potential of Jammu is unique in many ways; it includes breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, magnificent cuisine and warm hospitality. If these elements are explored fully Jammu can create a niche for itself on the global tourism map. The administration has embarked on a mission to develop water parks, establish cultural centres at Ramban, Udhampur, Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch. The aim of such initiatives is to build local capacities, boost employment and create a favourable climate for entrepreneurship. Places that can be developed into tourism spots need all the necessary infrastructure and resources and the government is spending huge amounts to create facilities for the visitors. This year Rs 447 crore have been allocated to the tourism sector. The objective is to develop J&K as a modern and smart tourist destination. Samba Fort and General Zorawar Singh Palace are all set to be renovated to revive the cultural legacy. Similarly the government is working towards developing the religious tourism circuit in Jammu by connecting prominent religious places in the region. For the past 70-years Jammu region couldn’t witness much development due to one or other reason. But during the past few years the situation has changed as the government has decided to ensure that tourists coming to Jammu reach the places which weren’t accessible in the yesteryears. Efforts are being put in to bring Jammu region at par with Kashmir vis-à-vis developing the tourism sector. These efforts were missing till the Kashmir based politicians ruled J&K. But now, Jammu is getting the attention it has been yearning for so many years. |
