Improving Connectivity

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari while concluding his 2-day Jammu and Kashmir visit announced that roads of the Union Territory will be made equivalent to American roads in the next 3 to 4 years.
Pertinently, after the scrapping of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, the Centre has laid emphasis on addressing the connectivity issues of Jammu and Kashmir.
Ranking of J&K among the top performers in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has vindicated the efforts of the J&K government towards streamlining road connectivity.
Road construction in J&K picked up pace after 2019 with the focused attention of the government on major highways. The initiative has considerably reduced the travel time between major destinations across the Union Territory.
After 2019 the Centre has embarked on a mission to end the connectivity issues of Kashmir and Ladakh regions.
The National Highway-44 is being developed at a fast pace to overcome the issues of it getting blocked due to shooting stones and landslides, and inclement weather conditions.
On the other hand work on two tunnels Z-Morh and Zojila tunnel has been expedited to end the connectivity woes of the Ladakh region which remains cut off from the rest of the country for four months due to the harsh weather conditions.
During the past three years the Centre has worked hard to integrate Kashmir and Ladakh regions with the country completely. Having a robust road network is part of the integration process.
Before revoking J&K’s special status the regime led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done its homework in toto and it implemented the plans it had worked upon.
After 2019 the government has worked on all the aspects which had remained unaddressed during the past 70-years.
Jammu-Srinagar and Sriangar-Leh Highways despite being strategic roads didn’t get the attention they deserved.
In the past three years the Centre has spent thousands of crores to develop these highways and bring them at par with the other National Highways in the country.
The present dispensation in the Centre is working with a vision to develop Jammu and Kashmir and one hopes that in next 4-years roads in J&K would match the roads in America.
