Jammu, Apr 12: Amid reports of the possible visit of the Election Commission of India to Jammu and Kashmir, BJP has started an exercise to prepare panels of potential candidates. Highly placed sources said that the BJP high command has asked state unit to prepare panels of three potential candidates for each of the assembly seats of J&K. “It has been clearly directed to the state unit that panels should not be comprised of less than three candidates for each Parliamentary seat”, the BJP leader said, adding, “party will field candidates on all 90 assembly seats of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir”. “Decision to repeat or replace the MLAs who won 2014 assembly elections of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir will be taken by the high command”, sources said and added that the only task assigned to the state unit is to prepare panels of potential candidates for all Reports said that reports of the visit of ECI likely this month has raised hopes of political parties that assembly polls in the Union territory could be held this year. The last assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, five years before the erstwhile state was reorganized into two Union territories on August 5, 2019. The Centre then set up a delimitation commission for J&K, which submitted its report in October last year. Recently, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the poll panel was aware that there’s a “vacuum” in the Union territory which needs to be filled. He said the polls will be held keeping in mind various factors, including weather and security concerns. While the ECI is yet to announce the visit, local media reports have suggested it could happen this month. |
