KVK, promotes scientific poultry farming among rural youth

REASI, Apr 15: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the scientific poultry farming among the rural youths of hilly distt. Reasi of J&K under ARYA (Attracting & Retaining Youths in Agriculture) Project.
According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Benares Lal, scientific poultry farming can play the significant role in generating additional farm income and employment for the overall sustainability through meat and eggs production among the rural youths of hilly areas.
He stressed on the commercial level poultry farming so as to start some new avenues of income and employment among the rural youths of hilly areas. He narrated that objective of ARYA project is to develop agri-entrepreneurship among the rural youths and scientific poultry farming can be adopted as an enterprise by the rural areas. He said that KVK is promoting the poultry varieties such as Chabro, Chabrown, Kadaknath etc. to increase the quality of meat and eggs.
He informed that Kadaknath is the only black meat chicken breed in India due to the deposition of melanin pigment, a condition called 'Fibromelanosis' and its egg and meat contain high percentage of protein and vitamins. Its meat is also rich in amino acids, has lower fat content (only 0.73-1.03%) and cholesterol content as compared to other chicken breeds. He said that KVK has laid demonstrations on improved breeds of poultry in the district to showcase the new technologies in poultry. He said that KVK is also guiding on marketing and economics of poultry.
KVK, Reasi has started the ARYA (Attracting and Retaining Youths in Agriculture) project in the district through which the KVK is promoting and educating the rural youths on scientific poultry farming by which they can be made self-sustainable. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi is guiding and encouraging the rural youths of Reasi distt. for the scientific poultry farming as it can open some new employment opportunities among the rural youths. It can also help to prevent the rural migration. By observing the successful results of successful poultry farmers, many new rural youths are showing keen interest towards the scientific poultry farming.
