Azad admits hard facts | | | Former J&K chief minister and president of Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad, has backed the scrapping of Article 370. He has acknowledged that the abrogation of J&K’s special status has ended stone pelting and terror attacks and has restored normalcy in the Union Territory. Like Azad, many politicians who had opposed the revocation of Article 370 have gone on record to say that after August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to change J&K’s 70-year long old status-quo—many things have changed in the erstwhile princely state. During the past three years Kashmir has turned peaceful as people no longer talk about autonomy, self rule and azadi. Separatists, who used to call for shutdowns and organize stone-pelting have lost their addresses and are no more in a position to dictate terms to people. After 2019, record tourists have visited Jammu and Kashmir. People are carrying out their daily chores, especially in Kashmir, without any disruptions. As of date the situation in J&K is calm and people are supporting the moves of the government. Politicians who had opposed the abrogation of Article 370 have started admitting that the move has helped Jammu and Kashmir to come at par with other regions of the country. All the political parties are eagerly waiting for the elections as the politicians have been jobless for a longtime. It seems that assembly polls in J&K would be held along with the 2024 Parliamentary elections. The revocation of Article 370 besides ending stone pelting has led to investment proposals worth thousands of crores reaching Jammu and Kashmir. As of date many national and international companies have started operations in the Union Territory. The fear has disappeared and things are moving at a fast pace. The speed of development has led to many old projects getting completed and new ones being executed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have remained true to their words about a new dawn breaking out in Jammu and Kashmir. Like Azad, many politicians, who had opposed the scrapping of Article 370, are admitting that J&K has changed for the better during the past three and a half years. |
