Gatka competition promotes drug-free sports at SPMR college | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 23: The Department of Physical Education & Sports at Govt. SPMR College of Commerce, Jammu organized an Intra-College Gatka (Men) competition/demonstration activity in commemoration of the "International Day of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" on June 23, 2023. Gatka, recognized as a national sport, is a martial art sport. The event commenced with players showcasing various martial art forms and skills encompassed within Gatka. During the event, Malik Aijaz Iqbal emphasized the significance of engaging in high-endurance sports for the youth, highlighting its potential in keeping them away from the perils of drug abuse while maintaining fitness for the challenges of life. Dr. Surinder Kumar, the esteemed Principal of the college, inaugurated the event and emphasized the role of physical education in keeping students physically fit, mentally alert, socially sound, emotionally stable, and spiritually enlightened. The Principal congratulated all the participants and provided words of encouragement. The event witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries including Prof. Shafkat Jahangir, Convener of the Sports Committee, Dr. Sandhya Bharadwaj, Prof. Savita Jamwal, Dr. Monika Malhotra, Prof. Deepshikha Sharma, Prof. Ashu Manhas, Dr. Nazia Rasool (Head of the Department of Environmental Science), Prof. Apfan Ali (Head of the Department of Urdu), and Sardar Ravinder Singh (General Secretary of Gatka Association of Jammu and Kashmir). |
