Early Times Report JAMMU, June 28: The Global Peace Foundation organized a Drug De-addiction Day in Government Higher Secondary School Binoon, Kishtwar district. The event aimed to create awareness and address the issue of drug abuse under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a flagship program of the Government of India. Students, staff, and members of the public participated in the event, taking a collective pledge to work against this menace. The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed globally on 26th June each year, holds significance in highlighting the importance of combating drug addiction and illegal drug trade. According to the National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are nearly 10 lakh drug addicts in Jammu and Kashmir. The survey reveals alarming figures of substance abuse, including cannabis, opioids, sedatives, inhalants, cocaine, Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS), and hallucinogens. Reports indicate that the actual numbers of drug addicts might be even higher than those reported by the ministry. The rising trend of drug abuse poses a significant concern in Jammu and Kashmir, affecting individuals across various age groups and communities. Unemployment, poverty, easy availability of drugs, and the prevailing conflict in the region are cited as contributing factors to the increase in drug abuse. These circumstances have led individuals, including teenagers and young adults, to seek solace in drugs, resulting in severe consequences for their physical and mental health, social well-being, and overall development. To address this pressing issue, the government and non-governmental organizations have undertaken various measures, including awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programs, and crackdowns on drug peddlers. However, concerted efforts are required to tackle the root causes of addiction and provide comprehensive support to those affected. The program organized by the Global Peace Foundation commenced with a pledge against drug abuse, involving students, staff, and participants. A large rally was held, wherein slogans against drug abuse and the importance of saving the youth echoed throughout the area. This initiative aimed to create a strong message against drug abuse and foster a drug-free society. The recovery of drugs from areas close to the Line of Control, such as Kupwara and Uri, as well as the usage of drones to transport drugs across international borders into different parts of Jammu, highlights the need for continuous vigilance and proactive measures to curb the drug trade. Overall, the observance of Drug De-addiction Day in GHSS Binoon Bunjwah served as a crucial step in raising awareness, promoting prevention, and fostering a collective effort to combat drug abuse in the region. |
