After Shah Faesal, Shehla Rashid withdraws petition against scrapping of Article 370
7/11/2023 10:46:29 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 11: After IAS officer Shah Faesal withdrew his petition challenging Article 370, former student union leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Shehla Rashid also followed his footsteps.
Shehla Rashid withdrew her petition as the Supreme Court decided to begin a day-to-day hearing on the scrapping of Article 370 from August 2.
Former vice-president of the JNU Students’ Union, Shehla Rashid, had also joined Faesel to oppose the Centre’s decision to strike off Article 370.
Shehla Rashid first came to the limelight during the protest demanding the release of Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, arrested on charges of sedition in 2016.
Pertinently, a five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant on Tuesday said the hearing of the pleas will be on a day-to-day basis except Mondays and Fridays. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am on August 2. Abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, stripped Jammu and Kashmir of special privileges and further bifurcated the state into two Union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. After the Supreme Court decided to hear the petitions challenging the scrapping of Article 370, Shah Faesal tweeted: “Article 370, for many Kashmiris like me, is a thing of the past. Jhelum and Ganga have merged in the great Indian Ocean for good. There is no going back. There is only marching forward.”
Deputy Secretary in the Union Ministry of Culture and an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Shah Faesal had withdrawn his petition from the Supreme Court challenging the Presidential order to amend some provisions of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution in September 2022.
Bureaucrat-turned-politician-turned-bureaucrat was among 23 petitioners who had challenged the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370.
