Omar’s walk to office a spectacle, say critics | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 13: Desperation amongst Kashmir based leaders to regain political relevance was on full display on Thursday after the former J&K Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, dramatically walked up to his office from his Gupkar residence, only to later claim that he was not staging a drama for public sympathy. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Omar walking upto National Conference office at Nawai Subah complex at Zero-Bridge was a move aimed at seeking sympathy of the people. It was nothing more than a spectacle, carefully choreographed for maximum effect.” He said, “It seems by indulging in such stunts Kashmir based politicians want to reclaim their lost territory as they are aware that after August 5, 2019 (when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories) they have been left with nothing to sell.” An observer said, “Political opportunism and staging a well-rehearsed drama for public sympathy won’t help anyone, including the former J&K Chief Minister. If Kashmir based politicians have to strike a chord with people they will have to work for it. Omar Abdullah’s walk upto his office was not a spontaneous act of liberty. It was a calculated political move.” “The timing of the walk and the ensuing statement were deliberate attempts to regain political relevance. Former J&K Chief Minister and other Kashmiri leaders are facing dwindling support. They are resorting to such measures to remain relevant in a rapidly changing political landscape,” the observer said, adding, “The desperation amongst the Kashmiri leaders to return to power has risen due to the political developments post the abrogation of Article 370. Their previous political platforms have been dismantled and they are grappling to find a foothold in the new political arena.” “Omar Abdullah walking through the streets of Srinagar has once again brought to fore how the politicians are struggling to establish a sense of political dominance against new entrants. As political alliances have shifted and ideological landscapes have transformed, established leaders are finding themselves at the mercy of public opinion. In their attempt to stay afloat, they are increasingly resorting to dramatic gestures to seek public support, leading to accusations of staging melodramatic scenes,” said an analyst. |
