Early Times Report REASI, July 23: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under the Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J), has taken an initiative to educate farmers in the monkeys affected areas of Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir, on the scientific cultivation of turmeric. The aim is to enhance the farmers' income by promoting the commercial cultivation of turmeric and increasing its production in the region. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Senior Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, highlighted that farmers in some pockets of the district face significant challenges due to the menace of monkeys damaging their field crops, directly impacting their farm income. However, turmeric cultivation offers a promising solution as this crop remains unaffected by the monkeys. Apart from its resilience to monkey damage, turmeric also boasts immense potential for improving human health by enhancing immunity. With this in mind, KVK, Reasi, is guiding farmers on Integrated Disease Management and Integrated Nutrient Management in turmeric cultivation. The KVK team is also emphasizing value addition in turmeric, which can substantially increase farmers' income. Dr. Banarsi Lal stressed the importance of proper packaging, branding, and marketing strategies to maximize the commercial value of turmeric. As a result of witnessing the successful results of turmeric growers, many new farmers are now expressing keen interest in taking up turmeric cultivation. This educational effort by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, is paving the way for improved livelihoods and economic prosperity for farmers in the region. |
